Food and drink

Obvious? Yep. Diet is the key. Something things I do to help...

  • Have multiple water bottles, filled at the start of the day.
  • Have a stockpile of healthy snacks/emergency lunches. (I have tuna and biscuits)
  • Use an app like MyFitnesPal to record what you eat. (Helped me lose 13kgs)

10,000 steps

The world health organization recommends we walk 10,000 steps a day. You can easily measure how many steps you take by using an app our, my favorite, by using a Fitbit.

If you're really keen you can challenge you colleagues to a "step-off".

Bonus: Ask a bunch of students what makes a great teacher and I'll bet one of them says “Someone that doesn't suit at their desk all day”.

A quiet mind

In my first year of teaching (15 years ago) I remember have a professional development course on meditation. Since then, when the day feels like is "running away with me" I try and find a quiet place for a couple of minutes to relax and focus on my breathing.

Choose your friend wisely

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

That's a quote form the Desiderata. When I was a kid my mum had a copy of it on the toilet door at home. TMI?

Schools are a cross-section of society. There are lots of awesome, inspiring and friendly people in society. There are also a fair share of...not so positive people. Choose who you hang out with in the staffroom wisely.

The five people you spend the most time with will probably provide you will a good average of your happiness at work.

Whether you're a graduate teacher or a principal, your to do list will always be greater than a 24 hour day will allow. Take the time to figure out what things matter most and focus on that. No one can do it all.

Switch off

I had one dry of traffic lights between my school and my home. As I drove through them I visualized that I was leaving “work world “ and returning home. (Spoiler Alert: this didn't always work ;-))

Try to setup a tigger/gateway that allows you to leave the day behind.
