Super Awesome Writing Power Time!
Whatever you would like to call it...I love it!
The goal is to get students being creative and enjoying writing.
I find even my most reluctant writers enjoy Fast Writes.
They feel much less pressure and they usually write a LOT more (pages!) in 30 minutes of Fast Writing than in an hour+ of other writing activities.
What is Fast Write?
Basically I give my students an image prompt (you can also use a sounds or object) and they have a very short period of time to write about it.
You can download four awesome Fast Writes I created HERE. Each contains 15 images to get your students writing!
I usually give my students 3-5 minutes per prompt, but I gauge it by how engaged they are.
When they have finished I ask them to share (read aloud usually) with the person next to them. I ask for anyone willing to share with the class (usually a lot want to).
I also complete a fast write for each image. Nothing like leading by example ;-)
Sometimes I define the type of writing like below, but I usually let them choose their own direction.
I try and use a variety of images, "something for everyone".
I've lost count of the number of times this activity has results in my students blowing me away with awesome writing...I hope it produces the same results for you. If it does please let me know (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Finally I've created four Fast Write PowerPoints ready to go. You can download them here:
